The Wars Have Been Waged! The 25 semi-finalists are in!

In the Heroes of the Storm Ultimate Fan Art Contest, we challenged you to illustrate characters from two or more different Blizzard universes engaged in battle. Artists heeded our call and picked up their pens, brushes, and styluses to fight for the Nexus with their art!

From one-on-one confrontations between iconic warriors to intense scenes of chaotic battle, our DeviantArt judges reviewed every action-packed entry in detail to select the top 50 as semi-finalists. From there, Blizzard’s panel of nine judges narrowed down the selection to the top 25 entries. The prevailing semi-finalists will now be sent to Sam Didier, Senior Art Director for Heroes of the Storm, who will pick the top three winners!

Congratulations, semi-finalists! And thank you to everyone who entered!

I took 4500 5000 pixels, with an emphasis on detail, wanted to show the angle and style like in the "Golden Axe" . Broken jaw Diablo))) And it was necessary to do more effect and epical...But I see your mistakes... and would be good if other draughtsman pointed at them and criticize my work. I Will be very grateful.;) (Wink)  And congratulation to all the finalist!Clap

It looks as though you spent an incredible amount of time on that drawing...wow.

What came to mind for me, is the lack of a central focus; the entire image doesn't vary much in value, and I feel as though complex drawings like this need that more than anything.

The dwarf on the right seems to shift the composition and almost makes it seem awkward, but perhaps that's only because the left side of the image is crowded. It also seems cut off on the left a bit too much.

Overall, I think your piece could have used some more specific lighting and value contrast.

Hope this helped a bit....I know what It's like to spend a ton of time on something and not get the reaction I wanted.

I was very disappointed by Blizzard Co.  I cant find any impact from some semi-finalists(Maybe more than half of them.).
I thought Blizzard is special at least until the announcement.. I believe that they will pick special, originality work, super creative, and also great drawing skill.
But, they picked some great skill works, and some junk works. and semi-finalists has not originality. nothing special..
I cant understand why they pick them.
Except some roughly, to pick and seems to have performed.
I dont wanna play Blizzard games anymore. I can sure that Blizzard dont watch the entries carefully, they pick semi finalists cursorily.
I realize that Blizzard is not special. so I dont wanna play Blizzard games anymore.
You should think about it
I CAN SURE THAT BLIZZARD PICK THAT SEMI FINALIST CURSORILY

Woah. All that hate.
I don't know why you don't want to play Blizzards games and how is this contest linked to that argument of yours.
But I can assure you. There is NO better company than Blizzard that can make better quality game than theirs.
Yeah they kinda lowered priorities through their game style to more casual, but I still enjoying their style and their visual appearance from game to game.

This contest though. I don't know. This contest is kinda shabby? Don't know which word to pick. Its out of a place. Many "meh" works was picked to semifinals over real awesome art (no I'm not pointing at mine, mine suck balls). Thus we have some really low level art here and some real good one. Still those artists who really deserve to compete between this bunch of art was left with no chance to return.

As I was told, this bunch of art was picked by DA jury not by Blizzards. Blizzards will pick three grand awardees from those 25 works (this actually in a progress as I believe).

Congrats on the winners, but some don't deserve the semi-final entry due to the lack of detail, non-original content used in their art. Extremely disappointed withsome that went through when some other entries that had spent more time on creativity rather than duplicating images for another part of their art.

The judgements should've been based on the fine details of the art, the contents and the events of what is occurring. That results from imagination and creativity.

don't be offended, but... are we trying to imply that the artist stole the idea from a previous work of art and use it as a contest entry? That is one hell of an allegation. Although there are some similarities between the two works, i don't think that Sargeras vs Monk is a rip-off of the one you are trying to cite. but that's just my opinion.

My tongue doesn't turn to call it stealing ideas, because the quality of the art undeniably excellent. But the fact that these similarities are many - sad. Whatever it was - good job. (Sorry for my EnglishSweating a little... )

Don`t forget this is a FANART contest. There is nothing original here. You can decide to make your own piece, in your own style, but that probably wont work. As we`ve seen, this is a Blizzard contest. There is nothing strange that ppl are trying to get closer to their style of work. The final 3 images will be chosen by the Blizzard team. I suppose they like their own art. So the pieces that scream "Blizzard" from composition to art style will probably win. There is no such thing as original fanart :) I`ve always wanted to make a Blizzard like image and I`m not ashamed to say, that I`ve also used a great artist`s composition idea, to create my piece. I tried to go as close to the Blizzard style as I can. Didn`t make it, but it was fun.

That`s the fun part about fanart :) You can copy someone else`s idea, characters, composition, art style without facing legal charges for it. Hope that`s clear now. Besides you don`t honestly think with all the art out there, you`ll come up with a new idea for something. Remember the saying "Everything new, is a good forgotten old"

I couldn't have said it any better myself. There is also this saying which tells us that "all art is theft; it's what you do with the loot that counts". In fact, Pablo Picasso himself has said that art is theft- which means that nothing in the art world is original.

The only thing similar is the perspective. Everything else is different. I don't think anyone can come up with a completely original perspective and nobody can own that kind of thing. It's all been done by someone before. They may or may not have been influenced by that...no way to know unless they speak on it, but if they were, it was merely just that. Influence on perspective. The characters, size, coloring, body positions are all different. I don't feel they've done anything wrong here.

That's true.
Also, we may try to come up with a concept that we'd believe to be original; however, there is a HUGE chance that our "original" concept was already conceived by someone else. It may either have been conceived by someone else in the past or independently by some of our contemporaries.

Congratulations to all the finalists. Some beautiful works above.
I can see the reasoning behind some of the arguments.
At least ten or fifteen above, while are technically brilliant, lack some individual style,
and are devoid of a certain style or character that exist in physical media.
That's the problem with getting to a certain skill level in digital art, you are constrained to the digital media tools.
The other problem is that a point will be reached, where no physical artist will bother with these competitions.
And for some, these competition galleries are their only showcase, as not everyone browses this site clicking random deviant or random deviation, which is sad, as their is a lot of talent out there on both sides.

I think it would have been nice to have seen the other 25 of the 50 that these were chosen from as well but I guess you have your reasons for not doing that. Seems a bit unfair to those artists, even if they didn't make it into this stage.

Congratulations to the semi finalists, well deserved. I can't believe the disrespect that has been on in the comments. I hate to tell you, but these artists probably still would have won even if they did the work traditionally. It's a huge cop out to suggest that the medium used made their work better or give them an advantage.

It doesn't matter what medium you use, you still need the fundamentals to make good art. These fundamentals (anatomy, composition, color, perspective) traverse all forms of art and people should be asking themselves did their pieces achieve these core art principles? The rendering part of the image is second to these.

Instead of taking your frustration of not placing out on the winners you should use the motivation to be working on your next piece and improving your art.
Artists shouldn't be trying to tear other artists down, but should be lifting each other up, and if you are not making art to make yourself happy then why are you making it anyway?

Good luck everyone on your next works!

Edit: Here are some traditional arts that will motivate you

michael-c-hayes.deviantart.com…
samburley.deviantart.com/art/K…
dsillustration.deviantart.com/…

I would also look at the works of frank frazetta

Then honestly ask yourself if your work is up to that standard.

Well written! I agree in 100% with every word (I would underline the last sentence).

P.S.1  Great choices of examples of prominent artists working traditionally (Frank Frazetta was and still is the King of kings!). I would mention here Brom (who did fantastic paintings for Blizzard - inter alia of course), Simon Bisley and... yeah there are truly great artists to admire and to be inspired.

P.S.2  When mentioned above Frank Frazetta couldn't paint with right hand anymore, he learned how to paint with his left hand. The same is with medium - traditional, digital... Art is in the mind, no in the tools which you use.

To share unbiasedly, what should have happened is that the contest should be split into 2 general Categories: Digital / Traditional

Choose a certain number between each of them to continue (let's say 10/10); then, have a winner of each category.  Then have an overall winner based on votes or with a written entry between the two sharing what the picture means to them and why they chose to create it.

After all, both sides give something the other can't.

P.S.--to point out, "isn't there a prize of a hand drawn sketch to win!?" If traditional art wasn't per say better, then why isn't there a digital sketch original up to give as well!?
Just something to think about.

Trying to win digital contest on digital resource run by digital company with traditional art is like painting rainbow with black and white on a fence.
DA/Blizzards will always pick digital art over traditional, cause its better in almost any way, yes traditional art is ... unique at this time, cause artists thinks that laying out their pencils collections or mixing real paint is SO HARD and deserve to be awarded. but digital art is the same when it's come to good anatomy, colors, render, depth, composition. it's just a little bit "cheating" when you can erase your mistakes easier than change whole piece of sheet with a misplaced blob.
DA/Blizzards will  pick traditional art ONLY from those people who REALLY professional at it (I actually have seen only a few on a whole deviantart with really epic traditional art skills, not to mention that I haven't seen any better traditional art against all digital one in this contest). Like this one - dsillustration.deviantart.com/…
But. If this one so similar to any digital art from DA at same level of render, why do you need to get better treatment only cause you know how to use real brush and palette?

So I have been keeping track of this contest and where did most of these pictures come from? 50% of these pictures were not in the gallery.  Ahhhh, corporate companies and their 'bend the rules' contests for marketing purposes.

Pretty sure I didn't overlook them.  I went through the whole gallery after it ended to make my picks.  I was going to enter as well but do to a death in the family I didn't finish it.  My top pick was Muju.  Granted "50%" is not accurate, however that isn't the point of my comment.  My observation means nothing.  It is 2 corporate companies running the contest and they make all the choices and rules.  If they decide to break the rules who is going to stop them?  So this disagreement is trivial and most likely irrelevant.

I thought the same thing, too. Half of these pics I've never even seen before - and I viewed every entry - reason being, there were a couple of entrants that I PMed to ask them how they went about various things in their images.
Also, one of these entries which broke the 'accepted size' rules by contest end - which was of course corrected after the contest submission deadline ended. Someone even pointed it out on their entry, in fact.

I entered something to this contest myself, but I knew there was no chance of me being top 25 - given that it was the first ever time I'd picked up a graphics tablet. And you don't win on 'first attempt' images, hah!
Nonetheless, theres one pic there that stands out above all the others. Hope that person wins.
