There's also "Dragon" from "Jane & the Dragon" :D

Of this list, I prefer Toothless, Smaug, and Charizard! (Though I also know about Mushu and Saphira.) But all the pictures here of all these dragons are so well done!

Wow you chose all the best dragons (that people still remember.) I really can't decide which is best, except Draco since I've never heard of him. But anyway, after a bit of thought, I have to say Saphira, and just so everyone knows, don't bother with the movie, it's terrible, but the books are great. Anyway, I think this is a really cool idea! But do you want a deviation of one of the dragons on the list, or what?

Kilgharrah and Aithusa from BBC Merlin (especially adorable hatchling Aithusa)!

It's too bad you couldn't find anything for Kazul, though... Kazul is pretty awesome!

Appreciate A Dragon Day sounds a great day!!  :D  Out of this list I like Haku from Spirited Away the best, I loved the way he could kind of swim through the sky in the film; before watching the film I found it kind of hard to believe that Asian dragons could fly, since they have no wings, but after watching the film it looked much more believable somehow...As for other dragons in books and films, I don't know if anyone here has heard of the Dragonkeeper series by Carole Wilkinson, but they were really good; I liked the old dragon, Lung Danzi, in the books, and Hei Lei.

Wait one Sapphira with feathers? I... Sapphira does not have feathers. Period. (Well she does in the movie, but the movie ruined both sapphira and the story so we pretend the Eragon movie didn't happen).

I'm also happen that Smaug is a proper dragon (unlike in the movie where they have — as standard (Skyrim, Harry Potter, GoT, etc)— a wyvern posing as a dragon).

I have to point out that using wings like arms is extremely inefficient and unsafe.

I would slightly disagree on that one, though. It's not really necessary inefficient because — let's be honest, lacking front legs could mean having more space for wing muscules on the body, and that could be an advantage wyverns might have over dragons (but that's nearly negligible because intelligently placing limbs would negate that). This also makes wyverns somewhat lighter than dragons. This could theoretically result in increased manueverability. (But dragons have the advantage of having six limbs total which is something as well). Is it practical? Well given that half wyverns stand only on their legs, keeping wings on their back similar to how a bird wouldn't really make them inefficient and unsafe. In certain environments that would be extremely bad, though. Which is why being able to use wings to hold onto things would actually only be an advantage for wyverns that populate the mountain areas. Which makes sense that Smaug and wyverns in Skyrim do stuff they do the way they do it. And I admit it, using wings like arms might be just a bit of an inefficient way to go around on ground, but evolution doesn't say "hey I see this feature would greatly improve the efficiency of this creature, here you go (next mutation adds and implements the feature")  — It goes like: "Hey here you have few random mutations, go and deal the fuck with it!" and calls its friends (Natural and Sexual mutation) to bully the shit out of [said creature].

I also don't think I agree on the 'unsafe' thing, because... I can't really see how that would be unsafe. I mean, it would get awkward on certain times, but as long as a creature has sense of equilibrioception and kinesthetic sense and is aware of its surroundings, then it can't really be that unsafe. If that wasn't the case — well then natural selection is (not) your friend.

I mentioned evolution and stuff here because I'm a "firm believer" in the "fantasy should be believeable" principle and because I also disagree with the notion that fantasy gives you a free, unlimited licence to make shit up because that's not how suspension of disbelief works. If we follow that transitive relation, this means that even fantasy worlds should operate using everyday science principles (such as evolution and physics) at least mostly faithfully (and I think that usage of magic does not necessarily negate this notion). Given your reply, I assume you hold a similar position.

That being said, the only thing that truly bothers me about Smaug is that he isn't a dragon. He isn't a dragon, and he isn't a dragon even by the relevant lore (Tolkien wasn't one of those peasants that think wyverns are dragons).

That is undoubtably the longest comment I've ever seen. I definitely see what you are trying to say, and now that you mention it, a lot of the things you are saying make sense, but the problem I see is that if a dragon were to use it's wings as arms, it would expose the fragile wing membrane to seriously damaging factors, (such as a sword, arrow, or possibly another dragon.) and could easily be torn beyond repair, rendering the dragon unable to ever fly again, ever. And since you mentioned it, I'm not sure if a dragon could possibly have enough chest muscle to hold itself up on with only two legs, and if it were to stand upright, it could easily be pushed forward no matter how good it's sense of balance is. I do agree with how fantasy should be believable, so, whenever there is something scientists haven't explained, I hope it's something fantastic, because if scientists ever find proof that there is no meaning to life... well, I hope that information never reaches my ears. By the way, that is the best explanation for I've ever heard for evolution by far, lol.

personally i prefer "european" dragons, with feet and wings.
