you know, i actually found this competition quite annoying... they've chosen pictures that have been done with a computer, and have completely cast aside the more "traditional" forms of art.

yeah sure, my goblin lady didn't have a background to give more oomph, i get that. but i saw other fantastic hand-drawn pieces that, in my opinion, surpassed the computer generated pieces.

it would be very appreciative if they took in consideration that not everyone uses a graphics tablet, and some may never want too either.

it would also be nice if they chose ones that didn't really have the same style a Hearth Stone; everyone's style is different, mine is manga, Astrozerk's is horror-based, some do realism and who knows what else there is.

this is a serious problem; if the judges can't accept the pieces of art submitted as an individual uniqueness and decided to judge on the type of art it is, then they shouldn't have been judging at all.

this competition has proven to be unfair and in a way, a discrimination towards all other art forms and types.

I still think they have been rather biased with the 'art skill' concept. No thirteen-year-old is capable of such detailed artwork, but they might have a bigger better imagination than some of these semi-finalists. The Goblin Technician, in my opinion, is the best drawn for the style, but isn't so creative. That's probably just the first thing that pops into your head.

Congrats to winners

I also think that judges could do their job much, much better. I think that strict number of 25 semi finalist is completely wrong idea. 10% from all submissions should be fair choice or alternatively at least 100 artworks! This way, Blizzard is the only looser here!

What? :) Are you kidding? Who is the judge? Why the best artwork just ignored, but so many creepy work the semi-finalist? What just happened here?
Where these artworks, for example?

It looks like the judges know nothing about art or characters design.
I don't think that I'ill participate in the competition again with the noname judges from the deviant staff...

was thinking the same. looking back at the rules, it also said that we weren't suppose to use any "marks" related to hearthstone, a lot of people implemented that little blue spiral in their art... that might be another reason.

The rules stated a golbin or gnome with his or her invention. A bit of these displayed more than one individual, and while the rules didn't outright deny it, I believe they just wanted a piece focused only on the inventor and the invention, particularly the invention.

I liked a lot of the submissions so much that I didn't participate because of how good they were. And while I can slightly understand why they chose the winning piece, I don't know what their thought processes were with 2nd and 3rd place. Art is subjective after all, and I'm pretty sure they had a hard time making their decision, because I would.

Hey Devianart, Can we do a contest for artists who dont work for a professional art/comic/entertainment/gaming company?
It seems like all these high paid artists with huge following , keep winning these contests, over and over and It's a waste of time for anyone else. There are thousands of great artists on deviantart, but keep getting passed by because the higher status artist keep getting all the exposure. You may not realize it but many great artists just stop doing art because this kind of nonsense. And now these higher status artists only get comments and favs because they have a ridiculous amount of followers and has nothing to do with the art but the exposure the same artists keep getting. I spent 5-6 years working my ass off and putting tons of art out there to get to where I am now, (Like so so so so so many artists) But it wont be enough if you always reward and give the same exposure to the same artists.  We are all great artists here, working for a big company doesnt make anyone better. You need to recognize the artists who are constantly stuck in the shadows of the higher status artists...Their passion is what drives this site

Welcome to the industry, buddy.
But seriously, the industry will do this to the end of time. If you want a following, good reputation, and of course, fat stacks, who would you rather pick as an artist to represent you; a new lesser status artist who no one knows, or a professional with an enormous following? It's all about figures, and popularity, and who cares to gets left behind?

Hell, I've seen 'contests' on here where the creator and the winning artists clearly knew each other beforehand, with the creator giving them tips on what they want for the 'winning' entry. It happens more than you think, too. Not that I'm implying that's what happened here, but it's true.

I honestly don't bother with this stuff anymore, I'd rather put my love and my soul into something off my own back, and go my own way with it, rather than praying for big companies to notice me, who very likely won't even give me a crack at the ever present glass ceiling of industry. Follow your own path man, and even if you don't get fame and fortune in the end, well, at least you can say you trusted your heart.

Actually if you look at the artists who are listed as the 25 semi finalists, I see a lot, about 15 now, who do not have a huge following. There are multiple in there which have only had an acount for 5 months or less and don't even have 100K views on their works.

It seems odd to me to pick these artists if Blizzard and Da only wanted the high end profile artists because these people are certainly not high profile. Atleast not all of them.

With all due respect, they worked hard to get where they are too.
And frankly the reason they work as professionals, and the reason their work appeals most to the judges is because they have an very strong grasp of color, composition, lighting, anatomy, and movement in their work. Moreso than many other artists, which is a product of their experiences combined with their unique take on the elements which comprise their work. This is likely from a mix of up to a decade or more of practice and struggle, and some various classes taken both online, and in person with other artists.

The art community is different from many other industries, in that two artists with exactly the same amount of time spent practicing, the same subjects practiced in their work, the same effort put in, and who attended the same classes can have EXTREMELY different ways of approaching art, and uncanny differences in their final product. This means if you had the exact same art resume as one of these professional artists, but were not hired for something while they were, it's likely because the way they approach it is simply different from you.

I understand you feel as though the winners of every contest are already established in the community, but for every 3 or 4 contests that DeviantART hosts on average, there's only 1 which features winners who are already moderate to big names in the industry. The last few contests have had an abundance of casual or undiscovered artists featured.

And with that said, your previous comment regarding the styles looking the same is completely unwarranted, and childish. Not to mention incorrect, seeing as they all have very different styles and techniques.
You're coming off as whining, because you seem to feel that someone who marketed themselves well enough to be successfully hired into the professional industry does not deserve to win a contest.
That is not only rude, but is downright insulting to the hard work and effort that has been toiled for each of those artists to learn their craft the same as you or I, and to market themselves until they made it successfully.

Im not saying these artists didnt work hard. Im saying there are so many artists without industry jobs that did the same amount of work, that are constantly passed by in these contest and on deviantart in general...the high status artists keep getting all the exposure while everyone else has to work 10 times as hard to same exposure for the same amount of skill and hours put into a piece.  And having a industry job doesnt mean you did anything different than other artist, many times it mean you have connections or get a lucky break. I have a friend who worked for blizzard way back when, and it was who you knew not what you can do.

I could care less if my piece did anything, I have more of background in fine arts than  illustration, but holy shit there are so great lesser known artist that where passed by on this with pieces better than the ones chosen, Read all the comments, im not the only one who feels that way

Winter Olympics Hockey, That being said, a lot of the winners haven't' been the same winners every contests, though the judges do seem a bit akin to the 15 year old with a taste for explosions, boobs, and lots of brilliant colours; two of those fit the hearthstone theme. However it may be that I just woke up and there's not a hell of a lot 'anti-gripe-fuel' in me. But the semi finalists would have been a better pick for the 2nd, 3rd, place winners. The 2nd place winner while a very nice picture has an overly dark contrast, and the 3rd place winner well it should've been second place, and Explosive ducks actually fits the Goblin Theme of lets make anything into bombs and blow things up.

I however am not a judge, most of these people who win are not professionals and enter for the exact same reason I did, For the hell of it, to try new things, and to make improvements, and thats why the semi finalists and winners won.

That being said; I probably will win someday, likely though it will be when mathematicians agree with me that you can devide by 0 (and if you think thats insulting go look at my gallery and see who I really am insulting)

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a little disappointed that some of the entries I was REALLY hoping for didn't make it, I'm just not going to say that these artists didn't deserve it (I mean, they won lol, obviously they did).

But there were so many amazing entries and so many fantastic artists who entered. I couldn't help but wonder if some of the entries got overlooked. Unfortunately, that's the issue with having a big site with a lot of people entering and some people entering with a bunch of submissions, you know?

Still, fantastic work all around - by the winners and people who didn't even place. I've discovered a few amazing artists through this contest that I would have otherwise never found.

I don't normally get involved in this sort of thing, but I had to say this all sounds like sour grapes to me :\
These artists made amazing pieces of work. There is a reason they work professionally and that is because they produce high quality images that are marketable. The styles above are far from identical. What they all do have in common is a solid basis for anatomy, knowledge of shading, colour usage and atmospheric lighting.

Putting down these artists because your own work wasn't chosen won't win you any favor. These artists put in hours of work to get where they are - just like you. They don't deserve to win less because they've been successful enough to work in the industry.

Im just saying there needs to be a contest for artists who havent won the popularity contest, or having professional jobs as artist. The site promotes the same artist that get bigger and bigger and everyone else just stays in their shadows.
I personally have commissioned 200 artists for my own project, great artists who dont get the recognition because the same old people keep getting more popular with art identical to people who didnt get lucky breaks or the same opportunities. I could care less about winning, there was a certain style the contest wanted to begin with, but Im just saying give the thousands of artists who dont have that fame to fall back on a chance

This contest as never about "fame" though. This wasn't a popularity contest. The community didn't vote, a business chose it's favorites. This was a contest for a professional, real business who was looking to promote a product. DeviantArt didn't exactly create this contest, it simply hosted it. Instead of bashing the artists who won this contest why not be productive, if that was your goal, and make a contribution. Give an idea for a contest that you feel would be better in your opinion.
